I met a gentleman one day after a church program when I visited a church in my city. I couldn’t help but wonder how uncomfortable I felt with his demeanor. He seemed to be exaggerating in everything he was doing, and when he approached me, I braced myself…
That was the encounter I had with a fanatic. When that man approached me, he was neatly dressed in a suit and tie, with neatly polished shoes and nicely cut hair. He had a nice bible in his hand. I on the other hand (please don’t judge me, Lol,) was dressed in a simple polo shirt over a pair of black trousers and shoes. What sparked our conversation was the tablet I had in my hand. I am going to try to be as precise as I can with our conversation.
“Good evening brother,” he smiled at me.
“Good evening, sir,” I smiled back.
“I hoped you enjoyed the program!” He grinned, “I was blessed!”
“That’s great,” I told him, “are you a member of the church?”
“Oh no-no, not here,” he went on, “but you know, I like powerful preachers, so where the spirit leads, I follow to tap into their anointing!” He punched the air.
“Wow, that nice,” I nodded.
Then he spied my tablet and then wondered, “You don’t have a Bible?”
“Oh I do,” I explained, “I have the hardcopy and I also have a software on my tablet.”
“Hmm,” he started, scowling, “you know the devil has a lot of ways he adopts to discourage us these days?”
“What do you mean? Can you explain?”
“I heard that those people who make these tablets and things—they are those ruling from the underworld! They are doing these things to capture our souls and spirits!”
I blinked at him, “Really? Where did you hear that from?”
“Oh my brother!” He exclaimed, “You didn’t know this? It’s not only that! The dresses they make these days, the cars, and even some of the bibles they print these days! The devil is behind them, orchestrating his moves! We have to stop patronizing all those devilish things, before they lead us to hell!”
“Oh,” I decided to be stubborn, “so, how do you know which ones are of God?”
“Oh, but the bible says that this world doesn’t belong to us, my brother. It is ruled by the Lucifer himself! We must be vigilant, pray always and remain in the spirit! It is the only way we will see the difference!”
“Really? So you think the tablet is devilish?” I asked pointedly.
“Hmm, it’s my opinion; these things don’t allow us to read the bible!”
“I don’t agree with that.”
“You see? You can have your opinion brother, but let the spirit give you his opinion. Those designer wears, those sunglasses, and oh—those devilish movies and television itself!” he switched his focus quickly.
“Wait,” I stopped him, “So, you think the suit and tie you are wearing was made by Christians? And your shoes?”
He looked at the arms of his suit and looked back at me with a confused expression. It was obvious he was thinking in that split second. He obviously had a thought quickly, and decided to share.
“You see, now this is where the spirit comes in,” he smiled, “you buy these things of the world, and then you put them down and pray over them until they are clean, and then you can—”
My phone rang, and I was so grateful it did. I left that man standing there with a bad feeling in me. If people like this man were out there sharing some outrageous thoughts with unbelievers, then it wasn’t good. But then again, there are fanatics in everything—entertainment, sports, and even academics. Fanaticism isn’t something that needs to be encouraged. As Christians, let’s share the Gospel EXACTLY as it is and avoid adding to it. Our so-called zeal may have a very detrimental effect on someone in the long run.
Let us spread our faith, just like all other ‘religions’ try to do, but let’s ensure it is done just as our Lord Jesus Christ taught us to, without any blemishes!
