I really wanted to get this question out before I send out my newsletter tomorrow. I’d need your prayer thoughts to help a mom with a young son with an ethical dilemma. Should Christians use vaccines created with human embryos? Here is her question and my thoughts. Please add yours in the comments.
I have another question for you. I really need to know your opinion. My son is three. I have been told from Merck – the vaccine creator – that their rubella and chicken pox shots are created from a live virus not from animals – but from abortions!
My doctor supports my religious exemption and so does my sons school. He gets only vaccines that are from cell lines from animals – no cell lines, no human diploids, no abortions vaccines.
My conflict is I called Merck and they won’t give me an alternative for the rubella as none exists. No other vaccine for the rubella is abortion free in the USA. They no longer separate the rubella measles and mumps.
So my son who is three could be vaccinated with the measles and mumps (they are ethical) but he can’t because the rubella (created through abortion) is all in three.
There is an outbreak around us of the measles I have all the backing from the school his future and his doctor on the religious exemption. But now that the measles are coming I am scared.
My question to you pastor could this mix his blood line if I gave him this? He is saved washed in the blood, I am knowingly going to put a vaccine that the company has openly stated a six week old young fetus lung was used to created their Rubella. The cell lines are being used in all of their vaccines. My doctor said there is no other alternative right now. I make sure all his other vaccines are ethical and in God’s will.
Please give me your advice.
Ouch, what an ethical dilemma you are in. Ignorance sometimes is so much more bliss.
My wife was told she was going to have to work on human embryos. She’s a lab tech. We agreed she had to say no and leave if that was the only option. Things worked out differently, but perhaps not for the best.
How do we take a stand on one side and then benefit from evil work on the other?
How do we say, “My child is more important than the one sacrificed”?
There is no way to get ethically produced vaccines?
Medically, this is really beyond my expertise.
Theologically, does this fall under the “whatever is right to your conscience before God” scenario? The meat sacrificed to idols was done in places that had basically sex-slaves worshiping the false gods. Supporting the industry by supporting the buying of meat was not part of Paul’s argument. To him it didn’t matter if we ate meat or not, what mattered was we showed love to each other regardless of what our conscience allowed.
Now my understanding is that human embryos used for most procedures come from fertilized eggs produced in excess in fertility clinics when couples are trying to become pregnant. That to my experience is a completely acceptable and un-thought-through ethical discussion. Couples want to have a child, and the odds go up with more fertilized eggs. So when a couple is blessed with a child early on in the process, all these embryos are left for scientists to study on.
But you’re left with the only option being “take what’s available” or “increase your son’s risk of serious problems”.
Can I put this to my readers and ask for their opinion? I know there is much greater wisdom than I have and I suspect someone or a few people together have the answer that sits well with your conscience.
