I can’t really tell you how long I’ve been blogging on RevTrev.com. All I know is I have over 800 posts and WAY TOO MANY categories. I suppose you can say the same thing about the number of plugins I have as well.

That didn’t keep me from installing one more…and maybe another to help it. I’ve installed the Organize Series Plugin and so wish I had it when I started blogging. You tag your posts when you post them (unless you’re me, then you go through series and label them more tediously) and the plugin adds the series at the top and navigation on the bottom. I’d like to change the CSS to get the color to match my scheme better, but other than that I’m impressed with how painless it is.

Why do I want to set up series? Well, it helps me refresh content. I’m going to be setting up training around some the series I’ve done so I want to get as many people to those series as would be interested in the training. Setting up series allows me to structure the posts from first to last rather than last to first the way WordPress needs to. Finally, it gives me some satisfaction that what I’ve written will be enjoyed beyond the SEO traffic…by the way I’ve discovered my early series had no SEO, so it gives me a chance to better optimize the site as well.

I’ve got a few series set up – you can see them in the sidebar under “Featured Series” I’ll be adding others as time goes on. I’m turning this site into more of magazine feel and back issues are a great resource.

So one day last week I was standing over the shoulder of someone who knows more than I do about WordPress and especially CSS and I noticed he was doing something funky with the menus. I thought it was because of the theme he had so I asked him, “Does that come with the theme?”

“No,” he responded. “It’s been in WordPress since 2.7″ (I could be challenged on the WordPress release – numbers like that don’t stick with me.)

He was moving the position of the pages in the menu, changing what the titles said, and moving others off.

Well I’ve been using the “Exclude Pages”, “My Page Order” and “Page Menu Editor” plugins to do those things.

If you don’t know I’ve been using WordPress on this site since November 2009 and learning more about just about every week. But I only tend to keep up with Updates as they screw up plugins I really feel I don’t want to be without. You might also need to know that I know I use too many plugins on this site. It’s sort of my “find something fun and test it out” site. I’m told by people who are smarter than me about this like WordPress that I should really use a test site for that… and I’m had enough hiccups to tend to agree.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know to check out the Menu link under the Appearance Tab in WordPress…and get rid of of plugins that people thought were such a good idea that they incorporated them into WordPress. Which reminds me, I also got rid of the must-have “Scissors” plugin.

I think I might do up a list of “Must-have WP Plugins”…which ones would you include? Let me know in the comments.

I promised myself to stop blogging about what I want to do since I found out it when you tell others about your plans you have a far less chance of getting those plans done. It’s because when we tell, instead of keeping us accountable, we psychologically feel the project is closer to being done than it actually is…I think I’m talking myself out of this blog post.

Ah…I’m calling it Wish List because I’m not certain I can do it all without conflicts in the code or dramatically slowing down the site. I know it might not be possible, but I thought a blog post would remind me for the next week to troubleshoot the solutions I’ve found and I know some of you who read this blog are much smarter than me using WP, PHP, Javascript and coding in general, so any advice you can give would be great.

I want more white space in the design. I also want more content. So here are the 3 things I want to change in the little while.

  1. I want the Twitter + Feedburner widget that you can see on TentBlogger.com I found out that it’s only for the Standardtheme, although the company told me if I bought the theme I could hack out the widget.
  2. I want a tabbed section for Recent Posts, Categories, Comments, Tags and possibly the “About Me” section I have currently in the header. I found out the one I want is only for the WooTheme.  MichaelHyatt.com uses the Standardtheme but has the WooTheme widget which tells me his programmer most likely hacked the WooTheme. There are days I dream I can hire people smarter than myself so they can take care of all this little whims I get.
  3. I set up the space below the Logo to be an image rotator. I’d like to get it to work.

The problem with #2 and #3 is that they’ll likely use javascript that can either conflict or slow down my site or slow down my site because they conflict.

Do have any suggestions for me for widgets or workarounds you’ve used to:

a. Combine counts for Twitter followers and Feedburner stats (plus any other legitimate ones you can think of)

b. Have tabs in a WP widget area – I’d prefer to control what I can place in a tab.

or

c. Rotate Images in WP – it will need to have links connected to the images.

I appreciate any help you can give.

If you follow me on Twitter you’ll likely see me tweet at least once a day something like this:

“Today’s DM Phishing Scam “Today’s DM Phishing Scam ‘lmao! this pic i found of you cracks me up when was it taken?’ DON’T Click the link.  Pls RT!’”

I do that daily because I was tricked once and had my account hacked. What’s a phishing attack and what do you do when you’re tricked by one? Here’s what to do when it happens…

What is a phishing scam?

A phishing scam is when you click a link and you’re taken to a site that looks exactly like the site you expect. On twitter, the link takes you to a site that looks like the front login page for Twitter. This is highly effective for people who use a third party app like TweetDeck or HootSuite because it loads a new browser window and unless you check the url bar, you’ll never see a difference. (The url bar is the place you type http://www…) If you’re on the real Twitter you’ll see http://twitter.com. When you click the phishing link it will be a long ugly url that doesn’t make any sense.

Now the goal of most Twitter phishing scams is to get your username and password. Once you enter it on the fake site they have it.

The good news is they generally want to stay unnoticed because they want to use your account to spam or follow as much as possible. So you’ll not generally be locked out of your account.

That’s why another thing I do is send a quick DM to people whose accounts send me a phishing link that there account has been hacked.

What to Do When Your Twitter Account is Hacked

As long as you have access to your account (when I was hacked, they changed my password) all you have to do is change your password (Settings – Password) and then go your applications and remove any you don’t trust (Settings – Applications). Honestly, for most people the safest thing to do is remove all the applications and reauthorize the ones you use as you use them. For me, that’s a little too many as I have a lot of things automated. So I just go through my applications regularly and remove ones I don’t use anymore.

With 747 posts on RevTrev.com I’m trying to find a way to let people know what I’ve been up to without overwhelming them. Every week on my newsletter I show the top visited posts that week, and those posts are fairly consistent because most of the traffic comes from search engines. The number of views grow, but the order just seems to switch around.

I don’t know of an easy way to show the posts “This Month” in each category. Even with the plugin I’m testing I can only say how many of the latest posts I want to show, not the time range. Oh well, that’s just something more for me to learn. Anyway I want to test this. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Why would you want to add a follow button to your blog for any Twitter user? I’ve found out this works in Firefox and Safari, but Chrome doesn’t seem to work.  Still I’m using it for two reasons.

First, it helps to have a list of users on my Kingdom ReTweet Club. As people join up I’ll add them to the list. A quick survey of current users on the list show a total of over 160,000 followers. That’s a decent reach for a tweet to get and the more people who sign up the bigger the reach will become. I’m limiting the club to 250, but currently we’re not at that limit and so using the follow button.

Secondly, I’ll use this code for a Follow Friday Post. My posts automatically get sent across my social networks. Why not get traffic to my blog from people who are looking to follow followable people?
