If you’ve gone to revtrev.com this week you would have noticed some more changes. I’ve been working on them for a while and really have been pleased by how they’ve turned out. The slider in the header I’ll change to go to landing pages for main topics I blog about. The tabbed widget on the left gives me a lot more white space even though it doesn’t work so well on any other page but the front one. The main slider I was really impressed with…until I looked at it in Chrome, and Safari, AND Internet Explorer.

Let’s just say I’m in conversation with the programmer right now. My default browser is FireFox and things tend to look good in FireFox that don’t behave the same way in other browsers. You’d like I’d learn…but I never do. As long as it looks good to me I how it looks to other people is a second thought. We’ll talk about that in this newsletter.

	When Everything Looks Great…Only To You There is a lot of merit in sticking to your principles. All of us need to hear from God and have our relationship with God as our primary life giving source.  There is a big problem however when we’re only around people who agree with us and we don’t take the time to listen to those who have a different opinion. Take my problem I’m having with the main slider on revtrev.com. It looks good to me. I spent hours getting it just how I wanted it. The problem is I’m usually using Firefox as a browser and while now close to 40% of people are using FF, it still means that over 60% of people are going to see something completely different. (see http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp) So of course I have to make it right for everyone. But what if I ONLY used FireFox? What if I said “People who use Internet Explorer don’t deserve to see my site?” (I almost did that with IE 6) What if I did what was right in my own eyes and didn’t give a rip what others thought? That’s the situation in the book of Judges and that’s the situation we’re in right now in North America. Churches can be the worst offenders. If I decide something is right and two or three people tell me I’m wrong, I might change my mind. If two or three of us decide something is right and twenty or thirty tell us we’re wrong…I still have one or two people agreeing with me I’m right so I’m less likely to change my mind (ie. repent). I don’t know when I started doing this, but it’s served me well over the years. I have different circles of advisors. I have people who know me and will tell me straight up if I’m out to lunch. I have people I’ll talk to about whatever situation I’m facing because they know the situation. I have people who know me and whatever situation I’m involved in. And I have people who know about similar situations and are willing to share their wisdom. That’s the key – wisdom comes from many counsellors. None of us have the corner on truth. And the sooner enough of us remember that the sooner we can experience true family before heaven. Of course, I may be wrong on that.

OK. I know. I’m a writer so I know genres have certain expectations.

We expect problems to be solved in 10 minutes for sitcoms.

We expect a certain flow and characters for an epic.

We like happy endings.

I’m not really put off with CBC seeing the success of BBC’s “Merlin” so CBC is coming out with “Camelot” this fall. I’m not expecting much from the knock off’s like “Canada’s Got Talent”. I can only ask “Why?” when I hear “Conan” has been remade. But I’m rolling my eyes at the new “Charlie’s Angels.”

It must be because the formula worked in the past and now is not a time to take risks because everyone in North America is motivated by fear. I can’t believe there is such a lack of creative talent in Hollywood. But I realize I’m watching shows coming it less and less.

If it’s not sequels, it’s reworkings. If it’s not reworkings, it generally drivel.

The two shows I really like to watch come from England. My kids and I are fascinated by Bollywood productions. When I want action, it’s something from China with subtitles.

A few years ago my wife and I went to see “Premonition” with Sandra Bullock. If you don’t remember the end of the movie you probably blocked it from your mind. I was standing up and applauding while everyone around me was awakening to anger.

It wasn’t a happy ending.

Sure I don’t agree with it’s deterministic view of the cosmos, but cudos for not ending it like Hollywood usually does.

I don’t know why I’m rambling about this today. I caught the end of a Nikita episode and started thinking how I watched the original series as a kid…then I remember the series spun from “La Femme Nikita” a film from France. A trailer to the new “Charlie’s Angels” set me over the top.

I guess the best thing I can do is turn it off…and create my own original content.

I just found this video and it’s got me thinking. I can’t say Oprah’s turned to orthodoxy as a few people mention:

…she promotes this new book called “A New Earth Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” and did a whole online series on it. Which states that? Jesus is important but you don’t need him to get to heaven. It states that no matter what God you believe in here on earth you will go to heaven. That’s why she says in the video to the audience? “for all of you wondering which God I’m talking about I’m talking about the “same one you talking about GOD”

But it’s still good to hear her use language I’m comfortable with to talk about God.

Here’s another question…if “by their fruits you will recognize them” why are we so concerned with her beliefs?

I don’t like presenting problems without providing solutions. But I also know that solutions come as we ponder thoughts together, seek the Lord together, and together share our experiences. Here are some observations I’ve made about churches in North America. I’m not accusing or judging and I’m not gossiping. Gossip is when you’re not part of the problem or part of the solution and you talk about it. I’m both part of the problem and part of the solution so I have a right to talk about it.

Jesus taught the Good News of the Kingdom...
We’re taught to teach the gospel of salvation.

Jesus taught by sending out…
We’re taught to teach we need to gather in.

Jesus taught with authority…
We’re taught to teach to the felt need.

Jesus taught with power…
We’re  taught to teach what can tweet, or end up on a bumper sticker.

Jesus taught as He walked…
We’re taught to teach while they sit.

Jesus taught and the crowds were offended…
We’re taught without crowds our teaching has no worth.

Jesus taught and healed the sick…
We’re taught to teach so as to raise false hopes.

What are your observations about the church in North America and how it lines up with what you know about the Kingdom of God? I sense an apologetic for the radicalization of the Christian experience coming on.

Oh the joys! A couple of weeks ago I realized all my sites got hacked. It took a while to find the holes and plug them up. It took longer to remove the 450 links to pharmaceutical companies on my sites.

I had to manually clean them all out.

Now I see I missed a link. I don’t see any signs of open doors so I’m confident the security I put into place is holding.

Still it’s been inserted 140 times on this site alone. I’m trying to remove them as I cough on my keyboard and finish up my message for the weekend.

I will have all of them cleaned up tonight (Friday March 4th) but if you see any “buy cheap drugs” links in my copy, can you let me know? If I’ve missed another few links there could be thousands of links on a site with so many posts.

Thanks so much. Don’t worry there is no way your computer will be infected with this malware. It was a server hack that happened. It affects my site not our browsers.

Welcome to all the new readers. I’m blown away by reaching over 107,663 friends, followers, readers and listeners with RevTrev.com. Thanks for connecting. Yes, it does get a little overwhelming at times, but I do try to answer every email I get even if I can’t make every phone request.

Defining Laziness

I was doing some devotional reading on my iPhone this morning. The Bible app I have let’s me tweet verses and post them to Facebook. I tweeted the verse:

And got some interesting discussion happening. @HannoL replied:

I had to respond:

It’s too early here for me to think up a definition. Does that make me lazy?

And it started to get me to think: What is the definition for laziness? Here’s what I’ve come up with.

Proverbs 26:13-16  defines laziness somewhat for us…

The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion on the road!
Yes, I’m sure there’s a lion out there!”
As a door swings back and forth on its hinges,
so the lazy person turns over in bed.
Lazy people take food in their hand
but don’t even lift it to their mouth.
Lazy people consider themselves smarter
than seven wise counselors.

It’s not good to be lazy, but let’s have a little fun…

I’ve been doing an experiment with the prices for eBooks at Expectancy Press and I’ve been asking people who buy products at http://expectancypress.com what they think of the pricing.

It’s not universal, but there is a consensus that pricing ebooklets at $0.99 and ebooks at $2.99 lowers the perceived value of the content. So I will be increasing the prices of each after Valentine’s Day. Why Valentine’s Day? No reason. Just don’t know if I’ll have time before then to make the changes.

So if you want to get a deal, go make those purchases you’ve been putting off today.

So that’s almost it for 2010. I’m someone who spends so much time planning for the future, I’m excited to begin. There’s a lot of exciting things happening. My plans are to help you with my experience and passions the Lord has entrusted me with. Hope to connect even more.

With 2010 coming to a close and my focus almost always on the future, I find it a good exercise to reflect on what I think I’ve learned this year. Yes, you read that right. I’ve been alive long enough to know the things I really know I put into practice and sometimes it takes a while for thoughts to become habits. Here are the top 10 in no particular order

1. In every project I consider I need to learn something, have fun and make money. I’ve learned to only accept the projects that give me at least 2 out of 3.
2. I can’t be so quick to tell my plans. I’ve learned that telling my plans makes me feel like I’m closer to completing my plans, but actually make me less likely to complete those plans. This is counter-intuitive, but really works…I can’t wait to tell you what I’ve got in the works for 2011…but I will until I’m ready with each project.
3. I need to remember the ant. It’s the consistent, steady movement, step-by-step that gets the job done.
4. I don’t always have to upgrade WordPress right away…although 3.0.4 looks critical.
5. More people care about you than you know.
6. Time is money, but money can be saved while time needs to be spent wisely.
7. There’s a life off-line that’s even cooler than YouTube.
8. Sometimes God’s Word is lamp unto our feet, other times it’s a light unto our path. Don’t get too comfortable with either.
9. All non-spam comments are good. People don’t have to agree with you to add to the conversation.
10. God really gives you wisdom when you ask for it and move with the wisdom you have.

I think I’ve contacted everybody personally…but I told a few I’d find the links for the questions they had and put them in a post.

There are days I get amazed at how many people actually read my emails and blogs and tweets and respond with encouragement or questions I can help them with.

You know what…I’ve got a lot more written on God the Father than I can find on the site. I will make this a topic in the New Year.

I’m a little hesitant to do one as Christ as our bridegroom. Don’t get me wrong, the Bible is clear He’s the groom we’re His bride. I’m convinced He’s coming back for a body in proportion to His head. What makes me hesitant is a teaching that makes Christ’s relationship with the whole the same as my relationship with Him. It’s because I’m a guy and one that has studied the Song of Songs in the original Hebrew.

It’s a great sex manual for a husband and wife…but I have a hard time seeing myself as His bride.

But it’s Biblical -

“For your Maker is your husband – the Lord Almighty is his name” (Isa. 54:5).

“‘In that day,’ declares the Lord, ‘you will call me, ‘my husband’” (Hosea 2:16).

“‘Return, faithless people,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I am your husband’” (Jer. 3: 14).

Paul’s words, believers are “presented… as a pure virgin to her husband” (2 Cor. 11:2. The Message).

The Book of Revelation says, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb” (Rev. 21:9)

I’m just not sure at this time in my experience I can do anything more than say, “It’s in the Bible. I don’t understand it except as an image of all of us together.”

Q. I would be really encouraged if you could do a piece on dealing with sexual temptation.  Pornography Etc.

Thanks so much. I’ve done a series on overcoming sin http://revtrev.com/cat/overcoming-sin/ but nothing specific on sexual temptation. Pornography use and sexual fantasy usually has more to do with feeling out of control in life and trying to control one part of it. When the root gets healed, and accountability is in place, real victory will happen. I should really do a specific post on all this.

Thanks for the idea. I don’t think I’ve done a post on this one yet. I’ll probably approach it from another angle…We are united across time and around the world, so why do we equate sameness with unity?

I get excited when churches work together, but it’s best at the local level. Jesus spoke to the church in each of the 7 cities in Asia Minor, I expect there were different houses where they met. Locally we need to work together.

Personally I see denominationalism going and true fatherships arising.

Q. There are so many people I know that are suffering financially. Maybe one of the topics you could write on would be about trusting God in these economic times. Maybe about trusting God even though there may be consequences to our own poor financial decisions. Tithing, obeying, all hard to do when there’s not enough money to pay the bills, much less to give God what we should (even though it is rightfully His anyway!). I enjoy your blog dude. How and Why Do I Blog so Much?

First of all you need to know I’m still just learning the business of blogging. I’ve only been semi-serious about it for a year. Sure, I had a few blogs going before then, but they were pretty much private places for me to publish or rant.

Second, understand I’m a writer and understand writers write. Good writers learn to write better and I’m finding blogging is a great way to make my writing better.

Writing a message is not the same as writing a blog post which is not the same as writing  booklet which is not the same as writing a book.

But the root is the same and it’s not that difficult to turn a 10 – 12 page single space message manuscript and turn it into 12 – 20 blog posts. A well researched and written 10 – 12 page message manuscript becomes a 20 – 32 4×6 page booklet with a little extra work. It also makes a fairly decent piece of marble to carve a chapter for a book.

I blog a lot because I re-purpose materials I produce. Here’s a few examples:

• I’ve written a self-publishing guide as well as a book marketing guide. I’ve blogified them and my blog posts on http://AskandImagine.com are set until the end of March.

• I took an early version of book “Hope In Transition”, cut out unbloggable parts and bloggified most of the rest. It’s not the same as the finished book, but it will market it well until the end of June 2011 on http://hopeintransition.com

• I’ve turned http://trevorlund.com back into my fiction site…I see the irony of using my real name for my fiction writing and the non de plume revtrev for my non-fiction…it’s going to take some work, but I have enough short stories, fables, poems and novels to post a few hundred times in the next year.

Why do I want to post so much?

1. It’s my personality. I want everyone to get what I’ve got. I can’t help that. I’ve tried.
2. I’ve got a growing social network that all my posts get syndicated over and I get to connect with even more amazing people. The more I blog, the more I connect.
3. I have a wp plugin that syndicates my rss feeds so the more I post the higher I rank on Google. It’s called Web Traffic Genius (my affiliate link) and I can’t recommend it enough. My regularly end up on the front page of search engines for the keywords I’ve targeted. I’m loving the new version they just released.

I’ve noticed a number of blogs I’m following have let up over the last week. I’m guessing it’s US Thanksgiving. If I’m following you, I’m missing you so I hope you get back to it. Scheduling posts is a wonderful tool I’ve found. If you have materials you can blogify, go  for it. (If you want to know what I mean by “blogify”, just ask. I’m sure I can whip up some steps.)

I know it’s December and there’s a lot on the go. Don’t add this to a busy schedule. Which reminds me, I need to release “I Don’t Have Time to Be Busy” in the new year. I’m just mentioning it now because in the back of your mind your wondering about how to simplify or complexify your life.

I had a suggestion from a new subscriber who got her first weekly headlines and was a little overwhelmed.

I really can’t blame her. All the activity that can take place in a week on this site can be a lot.

Now I’m subscribed to a number of lists that send me daily emails with links from their blogs. I personally love it. I may be subscribed to them in my RSS reader, but I how often do I get to the RSS reader? Honestly, if I went to mine today, there would be 10,000+ posts to catch up on…which is one of the reasons I don’t go there often.

I’ve missed my blog posts yesterday and I was planning on getting a few up today as well, but there were issues with site speed and theme continuity, so I needed to take some time and look into new options.

I’m excited I found FrugalThemes. It was easy to set up the theme, and I only see one issue that I need help to get fixed – I can’t get to the home page.

Anyway, I know it’s something I’m missing. I’m out the door to continue celebrating my son’s 9th birthday. If we have time I’ll be posting some PPT movies he’s created soon.

I have one creative family.

So What Do I Have On Hand?

This week as I was setting up HopeInTransition.com in preparation of releasing the advanced copies of the book, I thought I’d make it easier for people to book me as a speaker. I did a quick Google search for Christian Speaker – and saw this site is ranked #2.

I know why it’s ranked above speaker services sites, writing SEO web copy is something I do for businesses. It’s just that I’ve only been speaking locally and have had to turn down international speaking invitations to Pakistan, India, Myanmar and Kenya in the past year as I’ve focused on providing financial security for my family.

But I love speaking and am going to make use of it more. It’s easy for organizations to book me (as time allows) and I’m giving away messages I’ve done both at HopeInTranstion.com and monthly through our newsletter at ExpectancyMinistries.com and I’ve been able to launch RevTrev Radio – which will soon have interviews with Christian authors, speakers and ministry leaders – but for now will be snippets of sermons I’ve preached the last few years.

I’m making use of what I have.

What do you have on hand?

Take some time to think about the gifts, passions and abilities God has given you. You may not see a connection with them and your problem at hand. But just because you don’t see how that little bit of oil will keep your sons from becoming slaves or how those loaves and fishes will feed five thousand, it doesn’t mean God won’t multiply what you offer him.

I’m fighting a bad cold right now…(I type as I wipe my screen from something I hacked up). In December 2009 we had 2723 visits with 4368 page views. This is one month after we converted this site to a blog. We have two campaigns that will increase these visits as we market the site through articles, videos, rss feeds and on social networking sites – with a reach of over 3 million users.

The first is our 21 day mini-course “How to Hope Again”. When people sign up they’ll get 10 emails over 21 days that focus on specific questions answered in my latest book “How to Hope at the End of the Rope”.

The second is our 3rd annual “Life Above the Negativity International Campaign” – a 40 day challenge to fast from negativity. This begins on Lent (February 17th) with six days of posts talking about how to fast from negativity. We then get into 40 days of daily devotionals from my book “Life Above the Negativity – from 10 minutes a day”.
