How Do You Help People Looking For Help? TheCommon.org

I love Twitter. It connects me with some amazing people. Jay Kroll is one of them. I’ve asked Jay to share about theCommon.org. It’s a website that meets a real need for many churches. He’s talking today about the “What/why?, How?, and What Next? for theCommon.org

TheCommon.org was created to help people in your community help each other.

In your community, people are your greatest asset.  What we find more and more is that people want to help each other, but their awareness of the needs is obscured.  It could be that the opportunities are hidden on a website, buried in a bulletin, or (because of the time it takes conventionally to recruit people) the needs are only ever shared with a few “Super Volunteers” that you know you can count on.  What you end up with is a disengaged community and a few overwhelmed volunteers.
How does it work?
TheCommon.org exists to change that by connecting people who have the ability and desire to serve with people who have needs–inside their community and through partner organizations.  Needs and Abilities are matched by category. If you like doing home repair, you add the ability and receive email notifications of the Home Repair needs in your community.  Individuals can post needs as well—for themselves or on behalf of people they know.  When you let people talk to each other, you allow connections to be made and needs to be met without the burden of community administrators having to be gatekeepers.
It’s an easy, efficient, safe, and–dare we say–fun way, for people to help and be helped.

Where do I start?

Register: Go to www.TheCommon.org and sign up your community! Choose   “I’m a leader in my community” on our homepage for directions.

Build: Once registered you will receive an email from us with your user id and password, as well as resources to help you build your community.  Choose your facilitators, start to blend – and we’re here to help when you need us.

Launch: Every community needs members! Whether rolling it out to 10 or 10,000 – adding members is easy; you just need to spread the word!

Grow: Learn and love it!  Check out www.TheCommon.org/University to help answer questions and train your members.
