Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich.? Be wise enough to know when to quit.? In the blink of an eye wealth disappears,? for it will sprout wings? and fly away like an eagle. Proverbs 23:4-5 (New Living Translation)

How many times have you been approached by a well-meaning Christian friend who needs you for their MLM plan? Amway? Melelluca? How often does someone what you to “join their business”?

Listen, I’ve made a similar mistake with friends. One day I met with a pastor and we were catching up with what’s new and I mentioned I accidentally wrote a book. He asked, “How can you accidentally write a book?”

“Oh, it’s simple. Anyone can do it. Research your sermons well and write out full manuscripts. Get at least 10 – 12 pages. Break it up into blog posts and you have a month of posts.  Have people comment on them. Answer their comments and include those answers in your manuscript….” and I saw his eyes glaze over and I realized what I was just doing.

There is an ancient curse…

“Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone.” ?Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
Deuteronomy 27:17 (New International Version, ©2010)

God has given me writing as a blessing boundary. That’s why I can accidentally write books. It’s easy for me to communicate through the written word. Sure I’ve had to study how to do it and learn the skills I need. But I know a lot of writers who get writers block. My problem is I don’t have time to promote the books I’ve written so I only release them once in a while.

I had no prophetic leading that my friend should be writing books. I have no idea what his blessing boundaries are outside of being a pastor. I shouldn’t be moving his boundary stone to fit what I think is easy for anyone to do. It’s easy for me because that’s part of my boundary blessing.

There are people who do very well on MLM schemes. They know how to sell. They know how to market. It works for them. And it’s often with the best of intentions that they try to move a boundary stone.

It can’t be just about making money. It can’t be about making money at the expense of your neighbour’s territory.

To be living the abundant life you need to be living in your destiny.

• Know where the blessing boundaries are for you. They lie in pleasant places.
• Don’t let someone else move your boundary stone.
• Don’t move someone else’s boundary stone even if you have the best of intentions.

The other way is to look back on your life and see the places you’ve been beaten up. Look to see where the stressors have been strongest. The enemy sees the glory that God has deposited in you and does everything they can to steal, kill and destroy it.

While they’re doing that, God is allow it so that the glory He’s deposited in you will be refined and shined and made to reflect Him.

Malachi 3:3 tells us:

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;

When a silversmith, smiths silver he holds the silver in the hottest part of the flame. He won’t take it out of the flame too early. He won’t take it out of the flame too late. He watches it closely – very closely. He watches it closely because there is a moment when he knows the impurity has been separated and the dross has been cleared… it is the moment when He is closely watching the silver in the flame – that He sees His own reflection.

God keeps you in the hottest part of the flame because he sees the good in you that he needs to refine. He won’t take you out a moment too soon. He won’t take you out a moment too late. He’s going to see you reflect his face.

We may go through life unaware of the consistency of the flame. When we have the choice, we may withdraw from it and avoid it’s purification. Allow the Spirit to show you the patterns in your life when the enemy has attacked. You’ll see it’s also the Father wanting to purify. Those places most likely are where your destiny lies.

You may have never had a spiritual father or mother speak words of promise over you. Does this mean you can’t use this key to refocus from the pain to the promise?

You can use this tool when you ask the Father to reveal the treasure He’s hidden in you. Invite Him to bring to your memory a passion from your childhood, or an encouragement from a teacher or pastor or friend.

It’s as simple as praying:

Father, I need direction and encouragement. I don’t know what to do as this point. Show me a glimpse of the treasure you’ve hidden in me that others have seen and encouraged me with. I know you said as I delight myself in you, you’ll give me the desires of my heart. Show me the desires you’ve put in my heart.

Now wait for Him to speak and show you a memory to encourage you. He will. He loves giving good gifts to His children.

There’s another place to look for clues. I’ll tell you an obvious place in the next post… it’s obvious but one we often overlook.

We’ve also looked at the possibility that God has trusted you with something of value and how we can know if we’re trusting God. We’ve reminded ourselves that God’s ready to help and how to be yoked with Jesus. I told you 4 things I’ve learned to do when the yoke is uncomfortable and discussed how to keep your focus on  the ultimate purpose. You’ve got 4 Questions to Define Your Destiny. Now let’s consider if we’ve forgotten about each other.

On our journey to our destiny, we need help along the way.  There’s one other burden that’s common to all of us I said I’d come back to and now is the time. It’s part of the purpose for each of us. We’re told to:

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 (New International Version)

Too many of us grow weary with the yoke because we don’t have someone to come alongside to steady us when we become off balanced.

I mentioned another yoke in agrarian societies. These yokes are for people and they allow them to handle a more difficult load. It’s a tool that makes the job easier.

But the thing about carrying a heavy load yourself…

• You can stumble and the weight of the load can make you fall.
• You can turn too quickly and the momentum can carry you into the ditch.
• You can look up and lose your purpose.

We need someone else to steady us when we stumble.
We need someone else to stop us from going off course.
We need someone else to help us from losing our purpose.

Who can you help today? It’s as simple as slowing down to be a friend.

We met Len in New Zealand and really came to appreciate his ministry. I’m so blessed to have him as a guest blogger for a series of posts on Vision.

Have you ever found yourself struggling to bring focus to your life, or perhaps you find yourself feeling completely unfulfilled and unhappy – even though you have what others would regard as a “perfect life”? It would seem like no matter what differences we may have culturally or religiously across the world we are all seeking for some sort of purpose or definition for why we live.

“Without a vision,” the Bible tells us, “the people perish.” Another translation says, “The people run wild”.

If we study the life of man we see the need for vision or purpose is very evident. Vision creates a destination for our lives, and that destination for our lives creates satisfaction.  There is a desire for more than just wandering through life without a purpose. We want to look back at our lives and feel that we have accomplished something; we want to live a successful life. We attempt to find success through things like marriage, children education, career, finances and even religion. Most people would define a purposeful life as achieving financial success.  The reality is, though, that money does not translate into happiness or the feeling of achieving purpose.

Religion with all its noble values and good intentions cannot, in itself, provide true purpose.

This question then arises, “Can anyone ever find true purpose and fulfilment?” The answer is found in recognizing the uniqueness of your life, as well as recognizing the one Source of your creation – that is Jesus Christ! God created each one of us.  He had a plan in mind for our lives even before the point of our conception.  It’s a perfect plan; it is unique to every other person around us.  It is God’s vision for our lives.

“In Him (Jesus) we were chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, in order that we who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:11-12).

As we’ve discussed How to Steward Your Destiny. I’ve already written about how to seek wise counsel, look to what you have, borrow and shut the door so you can dream declare, and practice. We’ve also talked about how we are to “Go”.

I’m often asked, not in so many words, but with the same sentiment:  “How can I orchestrate the emergence of my destiny?”

You can’t.  Need proof?

Moses knew he was a leader and so he killed the Egyptian who was beating his fellow Israelite. He was trying to step into his calling before himself or the people were ready for it.

He had to learn to take care of sheep in the wilderness. He had to know he couldn’t do what God was asking him to do without the help of God and others. He needed another 40 years of wisdom and ripening.

This is great news. God is the one who is going to open up doors that no one can shut and shut doors that no one can open. When your walking righteously, it is God who directs your steps. When you’re diligent at learning the skills you need and growing the fruit that you need, it’s going to happen. God hasn’t taken you through what He’s taken you through so you can sit and look nice on a shelf.  I’m confident the good work that is started in you will be completed.

So stay strong. Keep in step with the Spirit. Keep growing, keep learning, keep loving, keep obeying. God is with you and has entrusted you with something great.

How do we steward our destiny? There comes a time for us to “go” and as we go, we need to go as Jesus went.

Jesus Set the Pattern

I can’t tell you when it’s time for you to go. But I’m glad to say Jesus gave us the pattern for how we are to “go”. In John chapter 20 Jesus was already crucified and buried and rose again. His disciples where hiding behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders and Jesus appeared and showed them his hands and side. Then He said: “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”  As the Father sent Jesus, so Jesus sends us. The same manner and the same means and with the same Spirit in which the Father sent the Son, so the Son tells us to “go”.

So How Did the Father Send the Son?

From the context, we see “the going” is earmarked by peace.  He said; “Peace be with you” Jesus earlier said: So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Jesus’ walk is permeated with peace. He didn’t fear storms. He didn’t fear demons. He didn’t fear men. He didn’t fear impossibilities.  I think we can see how He walked in that peace.

He Kept in Step with the Spirit

Jesus only did what He saw the Father do He only said what He heard the Father say. The intimate relationship that Jesus had with the Father is what’s available to us today.  As we go, we don’t have to worry, because we keep in step with the Spirit.

He Obeyed

Jesus obeyed to the point of death on the cross. The widow obeyed the prophet and took what she had and took what she borrowed and in faith poured out the only thing she had of value.  As we go, it’s not just that we have this mind-shattering relationship with the creator of the universe, it’s that we obey what He tells us to do.

This is liberating…this is why I can say we “steward a prophetic call.” Your prophetic call is entirely on His shoulders. It’s what He’s entrusted you to share with others.  You steward the treasure He’s entrusted with you. You manage the destiny He has planned for you. You’re responsibility to move in your prophetic destiny is to keep in step with the Spirit and obey what He says. It’s an amazing partnership deal. There is no downside to this…as long as you understand God is good and in a good mood.

He Had Friendship With God

The final point of “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” is that as we keep in step with the Spirit, and as we obey what He tells us to do, Jesus says that we’re no longer servants, we are His friends. We are His friends because we know the Father’s plans.

As we go, we go in peace. We go in peace because we keep in step with the Spirit and obey what He says. Because we obey what He says, He know longer calls us servants He calls us friends. He calls us friends because He reveals all the Father reveals to Him.  Our steps are ordered by God because we are friends with God.  As the Father has sent the Son, so the Son tells us to go.

There is going to be a time as you steward your destiny, that the time will come to “go.” When you’re waiting for it, I know there are days you don’t think it will, but if it’s from God and you’ve stewarded it well, your destiny will come about.

There came a time with the widow women in 2 Kings 4:1-7:

She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

The prophet said, “Go…” There will be a time when God says, “Take it out into the open, show people what I’ve poured out through you. They’re going to find it valuable.”

“Going” means it’s time to take public what you created in private. It means you launch that business, run for office, shoot that movie, write for that newspaper, start that ministry…whatever He’s put in you to help fulfill your destiny. It’s time to “go,” when everything is filled.  I’m not saying you won’t need to be re-filled, I’m saying everything is so full, you can’t keep it inside. I don’t want you to lose sight of the call. You’re not meant to be behind closed doors forever. Having a room full of supernaturally filled pots is useless.  You’ve got to make public use of what He’s given you in private.

As you go, the steps fall into place. Let me explain what I mean: The widow never asked, “Who do I sell to?” or “What price do I set?” or “Do I sell here or there?” or “Do I try to undercut the competition?” or “Do I sell with my story?” or “Do I leverage the oil I have to get more empty jars that I can fill up with more oil?” or “Do I wait until the fast until the price of oil goes up?”

No. Every indication is she went and did what she was told. Her kids were going to be slaves. She would have obeyed to went out and sold.  The prophet said, “go” and we can assume she went.

It’s how we go that’s the important thing. Jesus set the pattern and we’ll discuss that in the next post.

Now let’s look at shut the door so you can Practice.

When you’re behind closed doors, away from the public eye – practice your passion. It’s OK to make mistakes. It’s OK to not always get it right. It’s OK to not be perfect.  Hone your skills. Keep pouring that oil until all the vessels are full. You can’t get more of what you have until you pour out what you’ve got.

Do this in private.  Please hear what I’m saying… For example, if God has given you a passion to see people healed. I’m not saying, “Don’t pray for anyone on the street until you know they’ll be healed.” I’m not saying, “Don’t pray for anyone at church until you have a testimony.” Both of those situation are private, even thought they are done in public. They are private because you’re not there to make a name for yourself. You’re not confronting the prophets of Baal on primetime TV.

God may give you a great ministry. He may ask you to do many public challenges. When it’s time for you to practice, it’s not time for you to make public challenges. Your church family is a safe place for you to practice.

There will come a time when you are to launch that new business or release that movie, or run for public office or start that mom’s group or syndicate that teaching or publish that book – those are times to be public. You’re never going to be ready for the next step until you practice behind your closed doors.

Do you know you should write one million words before you get published? I’m getting very close, although I think I’m sold on running my own publishing house. I did that in private…except for my blogs. You hone the skills, you learn the art, you channel your passion, you do that behind closed doors.

Shut the door to criticism. Shut the door to naysayers. Shut the door to voices who are agreeing with the enemy. Shut the door so you can dream with God. Shut the door so you can agree with His promises. Shut the door so you can practice. This is how you take what you borrow and add to it what little you have so have something that others are going to find value in.

Now let’s look at shut the door so you can declare.

Declare the promises of Scripture.

The second thing you can do when you shut the door is to declare the promises of Scripture.

Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. In him, this is what we preach and pray, the great Amen, God’s Yes and our Yes together, gloriously evident. God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us. By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete. (2 Corinthians 1:20-22 (The Message))

Let the Spirit lead you to the promises from Scripture that speak to you on a particular topic. Then personalize them, write them out, and regularly declare them out loud. I’ll talk more about this in Chapter 8 of my book Hope in Transition as it’s an important part in implementing a winning strategy in the process of hope.

Shut the door to criticism. Shut the door to naysayers. Shut the door to voices who are agreeing with the enemy.  Shut the door so you can dream with God. Shut the door so you can agree with His promises.

Dream about your prophetic word. What will it look like?  It’s important how we consider our prophetic call. If you’ve got them written down, read them regularly. If you’ve got them recorded on audio, listen to them. Day dream about them. Pray to God about them. Ask Him to reveal more. I do up pictures with promises and hang them up so we can see them, consider them, and learn to agree with them. When God speaks, we need to treat it as He commanded the children of Israel to treat the words He gave them:

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Don’t think that you’ll be disappointed when you dream about the fulfillment of the prophetic call and when you actually experience its fulfillment…God is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine.

Shut the door to criticism. Shut the door to naysayers. Shut the door to voices who are agreeing with the enemy. Shut the door so you can dream with God.

In 2 Kings 4:1-7 the widow was told to gather up all the empty jars she could.  In stewarding your destiny learn from others who are walking the path you want to walk. You’re not observing them to copy them, but to glean what you can. God isn’t in to copycats. He made us all unique for a reason.  What skills will you need that you must improve on? What wisdom are you lacking? Whose anointing will you come under?

Read books. Listen to podcasts. Get email newsletters for where you want to walk. Study courses. Find a mentor. Get the skills you need to do the work He’s entrusted you to do.

Use the advantage you have as a follower of Christ – borrow from the Holy Spirit – He teaches you all things. Spend time with Him and ask Him for supernatural keys to do what He’s asked you to do. You have the creator of the universe to ask for creativity from. He can speak to us in dreams. Pay attention to the dreams you have at night. Intelligent people are always ready to learn, their ears are open for knowledge

Be wise in who you borrow from. They key is keeping in step with the Spirit. I’ve learned the hard way to avoid a certain type of internet marketeer. They don’t answer the questions I have. They only show a basic knowledge in their area of supposed expertise. They are more interested in selling whatever product that makes them the most money that day.

Yes intelligent people are ready to learn, but what they learn is also important.

I recommend products, but only ones I use and find useful that I know will be useful for others. I’m more interested in producing exceptional informational products myself. Anyway, study well, but don’t get stuck on the study-to-action ratio. Apparently for most people it’s 12-1. We study 12x the materials we act on.

As we’re discussing how to steward your destiny, I’ve taken some time to discuss how to learn what it could be when you don’t have prophecies over your life. You can look to your nature that God created and called good, you can also look at your passion.

The third place to look is your pain.  Look back on your life and see the places you’ve been beaten up. Look to see where the stressors have been strongest. The enemy sees the glory that God has deposited in you and does everything they can to steal, kill and destroy it.

Now, here’s a Kingdom secret. You may only see pain in those situations, but something far more important was also happening.

While the enemy was attacking you, God was seeing the glory He’s deposited in you be refined and shined and made to reflect Him.

In Malachi it says:

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; (Malachi 3:3)

When a silversmith, smiths silver he holds the silver in the hottest part of the flame. He won’t take it out of the flame too early. He won’t take it out of the flame too late. He watches it closely – very closely. He watches it closely because there is a moment when he knows the impurity has been separated and the dross has been cleared…it is the moment – it may not seem like it, but it is when He is closely watching the silver in the flame – that He sees His own reflection.

God keeps you in the hottest part of the flame because he sees the good in you that he needs to refine. He won’t take you out a moment too soon. He won’t take you out a moment too late. He’s going to see you reflect his face.

We may go through life unaware of the consistency of the flame. When we have the choice, we may withdraw from it and avoid it’s purification. Allow the Spirit to show you the patterns in your life when the enemy has attacked. You’ll see it’s also the Father wanting to purify. Those places most likely are where your destiny lies.

You have a call, you have a destiny. Your steps are ordered by God. (Psalm 37:23)

So what else do you have?

If you know your prophetic call, you just have learned it, get an understanding of what else you have.

What skills, what knowledge, what passion?

Take some time and itemize them.

It doesn’t matter if you can’t see how they fit your prophetic call. You really are amazing.

Your best talents are the ones that it’s hard for you to see because you find them so easy you think everyone can do them. Most people can’t. You really are special. If you can’t see them, ask your friends what they are.

Take them before God and commit them to His plan for you. Tell Him you’ll use them as He directs, even if He asks you to use it in faith.

The widow had a little bit of oil and was told to pour it into as many vessels as she can find. You’ll likely be asked to do the same.

In our discussion on how to steward your destiny, we’ve already looked at discovering our destiny by looking at what we have in our nature. It’s not the only clue we have when we don’t have a spiritual father or mother who has encouraged us with what they see in our future. Our passion can show us what our God-given destiny is as well.

Are you having a difficult time knowing what you’re passionate about? We’ve all been there. When we’re off course and going through the motions, or so caught up with someone else’s agenda we can’t see God’s plan, it’s difficult to know what you’re passionate about.

But God knows your passions. He’s given them to you.

You can use this tool when you ask the Father to reveal the treasure He’s hidden in you.

1. Invite

Invite Him to bring to your memory a passion from your childhood, or an encouragement from a teacher or pastor or friend.

It’s as simple as praying:

Father, I need direction and encouragement. I don’t know what to do as this point. Show me a glimpse of the treasure you’ve hidden in me that others have seen and encouraged me with.  However you want to speak it to me, help me Holy Spirit to understand. I know you said as I delight myself in you, you’ll give me the desires of my heart. Show me the desires you’ve put in my heart.

2. Listen

Now wait for Him to speak and show you a memory to encourage you. He will. He loves giving good gifts to His children.  He could bring you memories or a vision or whatever He knows you can understand or seek out understanding for. Don’t get up too quickly and don’t think He won’t reveal it to you over the next few days, weeks or months.
