My son and I have an ongoing discussion with my wife. He and I are not satisfied with stories that have a predictable happy ending. One of my favourite movies out of Hollywood was Sandra Bullock’s Premonition. I know, it came out in 2007. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a real good movie. My wife and I saw it in the theatre. I stood up with a solo-ovation at the end while everyone else in the theatre had their mouth open in shock and horror.
My wife likes the predictable endings. She likes happy endings.
I get that. I just don’t think happy endings need to be the end of the story. In truth, a happy ending is just the place where the author chose to end the story.
We watched The Help last night. My wife was hoping for a happy ending. I was actually satisfied with the ending. It wasn’t happy. It was real.
During the movie and our discussion of it my son made the comment (that I’m sure he’s parroting from something I’ve said over the years) “Happy endings are lazy writing”.
I personally want that on a coffee mug. Thanks Cafe Press
Anyway, what’s your opinion? Do you like a happy ending or would you rather have a realistic one?
Let’s get discussion going in the comments.
