Journal with God Tool
I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.
Habakkuk 2:1
Do you know you can have a conversation with God through your written word?
You can learn to look to see what he will say to you.
Yes, it won’t be equal to with the Cannon of Scripture. But it should be personal and inspiring.
Here’s how I’ve learned to do it…
QUILL
Q – Quiet Your Soul
“Be still, and know that I am God!” — Psalm 46:10 (NLT)
Take time to pause and quiet the noise around you. In stillness, you create space to connect with God’s presence. This helps calm your heart and mind before journaling.
Find a quiet place, take several deep breaths, and focus on being still in God’s presence for 5 minutes before you begin writing.
Reflection Question: What distractions do I need to set aside to quiet my soul and be fully present with God?
U – Utilize Flow
“I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guard post. There I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint.” — Habakkuk 2:1 (NLT)
Allow your thoughts and prayers to flow naturally onto the page. Like a watchman waiting expectantly, be patient and open to what God may reveal as you journal.
Write continuously without judging or editing your words. Let your thoughts and prayers flow freely.
Reflection Question: How can I remain open and patient to hear God’s voice as I journal my thoughts?
I – Invite the Divine
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
Invite God into your journaling time by trusting Him to guide your thoughts, feelings, and insights. Acknowledge His wisdom over your own.
Before writing, pray and ask God to lead your thoughts and reveal His truth to you through your journaling.
Reflection Question: In what ways can I trust God more deeply as I journal about my life and faith?
L – Leave Edits Behind
“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (NLT)
Let go of perfectionism in your journaling. Your journal is a safe place where you don’t need to worry about grammar or structure—focus on being honest and open instead.
Write without self-censorship or editing. Allow your thoughts to be raw and real, trusting that God will work through them.
You can give them to a person of wisdom—see James 3:17 as to what to look for—and get their feedback.
Reflection Question: What fears or doubts hold me back from expressing myself honestly in my journal?
L – Lean Into Revelation
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” — John 14:26 (NLT)
Be attentive to insights or revelations that come during journaling. The Holy Spirit can bring clarity, comfort, or correction through your writing time.
Write a single-sentence question, then answer it as if God is answering it for you. You’ll likely be surprised with how good the answer is.
After journaling, pause to review what you wrote and ask the Holy Spirit what message or encouragement He wants you to receive.
Reflection Question: What new understanding or encouragement has God revealed to me through my journaling today?
