Let's start with how Peterson transliterated what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 6:25-26. He writes it this way:
He says, "If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is more to life than the food you put in your stomach, more than the outer appearance of the clothes that you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more than the birds. Careless in the care of God."
I know a lot of Christians will say, and they almost take pride that they worry. "Well, I worry about this, and I worry about that." And that's the thing that comes out of their mouth all the time. I've also heard people say, "I'm a recovering worrier." That's awesome. "I don't worry as much as I used to." That's great. You're progressing. But let's get to the tips to stop the worry.
How do you stop the worry?
Negativity Fast Tips to stop worry- Tip 1 – Agree God Cares for you
Well, the first thing you can do is you have to agree that God cares for you. That's what it says in 1 Peter 5:7. It says, "Give all your worries to God because he cares for you." And that's got to be the starting point. If we believe, if we trust that he cares for us, we can give our cares to him. If we don't trust him, we don't have that peace that passes understanding. We don't have peace at all times and in every situation. We don't have peace if we don't trust God.
"Well, I do have peace, but I'm still worried." Show me that in the book.
Negativity Fast Tips to stop worry- Tip 2 – Live out of your relationship with the Father
The second thing you need to do is you need to live out of your relationship. Oh, my goodness. Have you ever seen this? Have you ever read through the Bible from cover to cover, from Genesis to Revelation? And you might find two places in the Hebrew scripture where God is talked about as Father. And then Jesus shows up. And in Matthew, in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5, 6, and 7, he says "Father, Father, Father, Father, Father, Father, Father, your Father, your Father cares for you. Your Father, your Father." This was revolutionary.
Yeah, it was hinted at in the Old Testament in the Hebrew scriptures. But Jesus wants us to know we have a Daddy who loves us. If he's going to take care of me, why am I worried about the food I eat or the clothes I wear? I don't need to worry about those things he's promised. You've got to live out of your relationship. God loves you. He rejoices over you with singing; he is for you and not against you. And if he is for you, who can be against you?
Negativity Fast Tips to stop worry- Tip 3 – Pray – replace your problems with His Peace
Third, you've got to pray about everything. Philippians 4:6-7 in the New Living Translation says, "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for what he's done. Then you'll experience God's peace, which exceeds anything you can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."
You don't try to stop worrying. If you worry about worrying, you're in a pickle, right? How you stop worrying is you learn to meditate on the promises of God. That worrying is the same as meditation. If I worry about my problems, if I meditate on my problems, I am worrying. If I meditate on the promises, I am meditating. It's the same muscle we use, right?
So if you know how to worry, you know how to meditate. What you can do is, if something jumps into your mind, physically write it down because there is an action to writing it down. There is something that says, "Okay, I'm going to worry about this later in prayer. I'm going to pray about this instead of worrying about this."
Negativity Fast Tips to stop worry- Tip 4 – Gratitude
The fourth thing: gratitude is the attitude that changes just about everything. And when we choose to be thankful instead of worrying about the problem… I've learned to be thankful—not to be delusional—go to God and lament; pour out my heart to him.
"I worry about nothing; pray about everything; and thank God in all things." I know it's not an easy thing to do. It's something you can train yourself to do.
